The NFL combine has historically helped relatively unheralded draft hopefuls vault their way into the top few rounds with impressive performances.
However, for every player who uses the combine to boost his draft stock, there are players who see their stock plummet.
This year’s biggest faller was Florida edge rusher Jachai Polite. Considered a mid-first round pick, Polite struggled at the combine, both in the drills and in the interviews.
Florida’s Pro Day was supposed to be an opportunity for redemption for the highly-skilled pass rusher, but that also didn’t go as planned.
Polite is still considered a top prospect in this draft, and his falling draft stock could actually be beneficial to the Seahawks.
Polite is now projected to be an early second round pick. If Seattle chooses to trade the 21st pick to acquire selections later in the draft, as expected, Polite could be a guy they are able to snag.
His poor performance at the combine, not to mention his comments about the combine interviews, are definitely cause for concern. However, if Seattle is able to trade down and draft a player with first-round talent in the second round while acquiring more picks, it would have to be considered a win for the organization.
Of course, last time they attempted this was 2017 with Malik McDowell, which didn’t turn out so well.
Time will tell if Polite suffers a similar fate.
