Seahawks cut quarterback Paxton Lynch

The Seahawks have waived quarterback Paxton Lynch, Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times first reported Friday.

Lynch (6-7, 244 pounds) was competing with Geno Smith for Seattle’s backup job behind starter Russell Wilson. It appears that Smith has won the competition.

Smith completed 52.9 percent of his passes and threw two touchdown passes in preseason, posting a 100.4 quarterback rating. Lynch completed 48.6 percent of his passes and threw one touchdown pass, good for a 71.9 passer rating.

Lynch was selected by the Broncos in the first round of the 2016 NFL draft out of Memphis. He failed to beat out Trevor Siemian for the starting job during the 2016 and 2017 offseasons and then failed to beat out Chad Kelly for a backup job last summer.

Denver cut Lynch last summer when the team trimmed its roster from 90 players down to 53. After not playing in 2018, Lynch signed with the Seahawks in January. He is 25 years old.

The Broncos may consider bringing in a veteran QB off the waiver wire this week but Lynch seems unlikely to return to Denver.
