Seahawks cornerback Tre Flowers excelled against short targets

Seattle Seahawks rookie cornerback Tre Flowers had a quietly excellent season in 2018. He became Seattle’s starting left cornerback despite playing safety exclusively in college.

Despite the steep curve, Flowers showed he was a quick learner, improving in coverage as the year went on. Flowers proved he was successful at forcing fumbles and finding the football, traits coach Pete Carroll has long sought in his defensive backs.

Flowers was particularly excellent on short targets, or targets less than nine yards down the field. Flowers allowed just a 51.4 passer rating on those particular plays, which ranked second in the league according to Pro Football Focus.

Flowers started all 15 games for Seattle last season, forcing three fumbles, recovering two, while also recording six passes defended and 67 combined tackles.

He is expected to remain in his role as Seattle’s left corner next season, although he could challenge Shaquill Griffin, who struggled in his sophomore campaign, for the coveted right corner spot in training camp.
