Seahawks backup quarterback competition heating up in minicamp

The Seahawks have themselves a backup quarterback competition brewing Seattle. The Seahawks signed Geno Smith in May to battle against veteran Paxton Lynch to back up Russell Wilson this season.

As of the first day of the team’s mandatory minicamp on Tuesday, Smith and Lynch are neck and neck.

“They’ve been very competitive,” coach Pete Carroll told reporters after practice. “They kind of go back and forth. We keep numbers and stuff like that and they are stating out pretty much on par with each other. Both guys are showing good arm and ability to throw the ball down the field. They’re moving well too.”

Finding a player in the mold of Wilson is no easy task, but Carroll has seen glimpses of promise from each of the two competitors.

Carroll noted Lynch’s running experience from college and the fact he logged an impressive scramble during practice.

“I’ve been really impressed with Geno too,” Carroll continued. “We’ve seen Geno not quite as much but you can feel the experience from him. He’s handling the huddle, line of scrimmage adjustments and stuff like that, he’s benefitted from his years.

“He brings a little bit of savvy – it’s nice to have – we haven’t had a guy like that really since Tarvaris [Jackson] who’s played quite a bit as a backup.”

The Seahawks resume minicamp Wednesday afternoon when the backup quarterback competition will continue.
