Seahawks: 6 takeaways from a close call win over short-handed Rams

The Seahawks came into LA today to face a Rams team that was missing several of their most-important players. Seattle was supposed to win – being favored by more than a touchdown by the oddsmakers for the first time in 2022. While they got the job done it was a bit too close for comfort. Thanks to a clutch touchdown by DK Metcalf, they came up with a 27-23 win.

Here are six takeaways from a close-call win.

1
Geno Smith gets back on track

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

After a couple of shaky outings against Tampa and Las Vegas Geno Smith had a bounce-back kind of performance. Smith was accurate and aggressive throwing the ball and avoided making any poor decisions. In the end he finished with a line of 28/39 for 367 yards, three touchdowns, a 116.1 passer rating and his first game-winning drive with the Seahawks.

2
Offensive line struggles

Smith’s work was especially impressive given the lack of help he got from his offensive line. Even though Aaron Donald was missing in action due to injury for the first time in his career, the Rams’ front line dominated the Seahawks in the trenches. They got to Geno for four sacks, eight quarterback hits and several more pressures.

3
DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett shine

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

Seattle is still looking for a legitimate WR3 weapon, but for now they still have one of the game’s greatest pass-catching duos. Both DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett were extremely productive. Together, they racked up 17 catches on 20 targets, totaling 255 yards and one touchdown each.

4
Tariq Woolen isn't human

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

Seattle’s defense was frustrating today to say the least – considering the competition they should have held the Rams to 10 points or less. One exception to the rule was cornerback Tariq Woolen, who continues to shine as bright as any rookie in the NFL. Woolen posted another interception (his sixth of the year) as well as the most impressive come-from-behind pass breakup you’re ever likely to see.

5
RB room takes multiple hits

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

The Seahawks’ backfield took several hits on the injury front Sunday. Rookie running back Ken Walker started hot with a 30-yard run on his first attempt of the game. However, he soon had to leave the field with a foot injury and finished with just 36 yards before getting ruled out. Deejay Dallas and Tony Jones Jr. also took their lumps in relief. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Seattle adds depth at this spot before Carolina comes to town.

Bobby Wagner's revenge game

Former Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner was obviously and justifiably fired up for this matchup and had one of the most disruptive games of his career. Wagner posted two sacks, three tackles for a loss and a critical interception. Wagner’s pick almost gave the Rams a shot at an upset, but in the end they just didn’t have enough offensive firepower.
