Seahawk Jarran Reed is essentially playing 2020 on a one-year contract

Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle Jarran Reed signed a two-year, $23 million contract in free agency earlier this offseason that will pay him $9.35 million for the 2020 season. However, Seahawks general manager John Schneider has cleverly structured Reed’s deal beyond 2020.

The Seahawks can keep every last penny of the $13.5 million that Reed is owed for the 2021 season if they choose to release or trade him after 2020.

This means that Reed is essentially playing on a one-year contract with an option for 2021 and the Seahawks can let him go without sacrificing any money. Although quality defensive tackles are difficult to come by, Reed will have an incentive to play his best this upcoming season if he wants to stay in the Emerald City for the long-term future.
