Seafield Recycling Centre incident: Edinburgh police 'destroy' unidentified item

Specialist police destroyed an 'unidentified item' discovered at Seafield Recycling Centre in Edinburgh.

The recycling centre was off-limits for much of the day in order to ensure the safety of staff and the public. The alarming device was found by staff at the centre shortly after 9am.

Seafield Road was closed in both directions between Fillyside Road and Craigentinny Avenue North. As a result there was much heavier traffic on surrounding routes such as Seafield Road East, Restalrig Road, Craigentinny Avenue and Lochend Road. The road has reopened as of 3.30pm.

Police say their enquiries into the incident are ongoing. A spokesperson said: "Officers were called to a recycling centre in Seafield, Edinburgh, following a report of a unidentified item being found at around 9.20am on Thursday, 22 April, 2021.

"A cordon was put in place while specialist teams attended to assess the item. The item has been established to pose no risk to the public and has been destroyed.

"Enquiries remain ongoing."

Edinburgh Live was told there were several police vehicles in the area, with officers appearing to block off the entrance to the recycling centre this morning.

The City of Edinburgh Council confirmed that the centre was closed, adding: "If you have an appointment booked for this morning please check your email and re-schedule. Apologies for any inconvenience caused."

The City of Edinburgh Council say the centre was closed to ensure the safety of staff and the public.

Council leader Adam McVey said this morning: “Seafield HWRC is currently closed due to an ongoing incident and the need to ensure the safety of site users and our own staff.

"We’re working with Police Scotland and will provide updates on our social media channels as soon as possible.

"Customers who had appointments booked are being contacted directly to allow them to arrange new appointments.”

We'll bring you more on this incident as we get it.
