Sea shanty star Nathan Evans and George Bowie to join forces for COP26 charity football game

A whole host of celebrities are gearing up to get their gear on for COP26.

Sea Shanty hitmaker Nathan Evans can’t wait to get his boots on with Lottery winner Jane Park, Mrs Browns Boys actor Gary Hollywood, Labour leader Anas Sarwar, Football Daft host Stephen Purdon, BBC’s Shereen Cutkelvin and her musical brothers, and Climate scientist Professor Mark Maslin for footie match ‘A Game Of History during COP26.’

GBX DJ George Bowie will spin the tunes while fellow radio jock Suzie McGuire will hand out the half time oranges at the big match during the first weekend of Glasgow’s big climate conference.

The Scots celebs, with more to be announced in coming days, will join football pros including Derek Ferguson, John Hartson and Frank McAvennie and other climate change experts on the pitch at Hamilton Academical Fountain of Youth Stadium on November 7 for the fun eco game which aims to raise awareness of the climate crisis during the landmark summit in Glasgow next month.

Cash raised will also be donated to Blameless, a charity that helps combat “eco-anxiety” among young people.

Nathan, who has just released a book of his own Sea Shanties, told Glasgow Live: “It’s amazing getting to play football and raise money and awareness for such a worthwhile charity. I was recently at the Scotland football game with Martin Compston so it’s nice to play after watching that.

“There’s some big names I’ll be on the pitch with and I’m a huge football fan so I can’t wait. I still play seven a side on my days off and I used to play Sunday league football with an amateur team.”

University College London professor Mark Maslin who wrote book How To Save The Planet and is one of the world’s top climate influencers said: “Football has the power to break down barriers and energise us all in our fight to save the world. I honestly believe that together we can make this a better, safer, healthier planet.”

Tournament founder Mark Abery who is hosted UK wide celeb Soccer Six matches with the likes of Robbie Williams, Blur and Oasis since 1995 added: “Scotland is buzzing for COP 26 and so are we. We hope this match goes a long way towards raising awareness and boosts motivation for the everyday football fan to live greener lives.”

Kick off for the first match on Sunday November 7 is at 6pm and tickets are available here.
