Children pick slimy buds of junsai, an edible water plant, at a pond in Mitane, Akita Prefecture. At a junsai harvesting event, children picked the edible buds by hand one by one from wooden box-shaped boats, finding the buds hidden under large leaves that spread out like a green carpet. The town of Mitane boasts the nation's largest production of junsai.
