Sea erosion: Chellanam residents to intensify stir

KOCHI: The residents of Chellanam will intensify their protest citing that the government should consider the proposal submitted by them regarding the changes to be made in the Rs 344-crore coastal protective measures.

Residents under the banner of Chellanam-Kochi Janakiyavedi said that the present project will not resolve the sea erosion issue completely and if the government implements it without changes it would be a waste of money Chellanam-Kochi Joint Protest Council convener V T Sebastian said that the proposed project along the 8km coastline to construct six tetrapod groynes and nine traditional groynes at a distance of 150m between each is a relief to the residents. But he said the project does not offer a comprehensive solution.

“If the project is implemented, areas like Maruvakkad, Chalakkadavu and Kandakkadavu will see more severe soil and sea erosion due to the impact caused by new construction. Similarly sea erosion will increase in Cheriyakadavu, Manasssery and Saudi as the groynes will result in higher currents and severe erosion. We have approached the government suggesting alternative methods but they are being ignored. A dharna will be held in Saudi on September 21 as part of the protest,” he said.
