SDLP’s Colum Eastwood calls for Boris Johnson to resign over 'Downing Street lockdown party'

SDLP leader Colum Eastwood has called on Boris Johnson to resign after it was alleged that the prime minister attended a party in Downing Street during a national lockdown.

The Foyle MP said that Mr Johnston must answer over the alleged gathering in May 2020.

It comes after it was first reported on Monday that as many as 100 people were invited to a "bring-your-own-booze" event in the Downing Street garden during the first lockdown.

Multiple reports suggested Mr Johnson and his wife Carrie personally attended the event.

Mr Eastwood said that Johnson’s repeated failure to tell the truth over the events have left many people wondering why they should follow any of the public health guidance.

Colum Eastwood said: “Boris Johnson is a con man. The oafish persona that he likes to project to the world is a pretence for a deeply untrustworthy and cynical politician who believes that the rules don’t apply to him or his inner circle."

He added: “The most deeply damaging moments during this pandemic have been when political leaders failed to abide by the rules they set. When people have sacrificed so much – being with vulnerable family members, attending the funerals of loved ones, seeing their friends – watching politicians break the rules is sickening.

“Boris Johnson has lost any authority or credibility he had. The best thing he can do now is resign.”
