The Self-Defense Forces Central Hospital in Tokyo has implemented strict infection-control measures against the new coronavirus, taking visitors' temperatures and separating high-risk and safe areas within the facility.
The hospital, in Setagaya Ward, Tokyo, is making transparent the measures it is taking as its staff members are involved in treating COVID-19 patients.
The hospital has accepted more than 200 infected patients, including the passengers of the virus-hit Diamond Princess cruise. As of Monday, about 20 patients remain hospitalized.
In the hospital ward where the seriously ill are being treated, the floor is divided into two areas -- one where there is a higher risk of infection and one kept safe from infections. It also designated a high-risk section as a "hot zone," and segregated it with the use of double doors.
On the first floor, the hospital has opened to the public a tent to check the temperatures of all visitors, with medical staff wearing N95 respirator masks and protective gowns and gloves.
"Besides the fear of the virus, the current enhanced working conditions are exhausting. So, I try to create an atmosphere in which people can talk about such things more easily," said Kaku Tamura, the head of the team that is handling the new coronavirus infections.
