Scunthorpe wasn't for me, I'm happy at Hamilton Accies, says Lewis Spence

Lewis Spence came back to Scotland to enjoy his football, and says he's doing exactly that at Hamilton Accies.

The midfielder spent last season in League Two with Scunthorpe United, but admits there were a few reasons why it wasn't a great time for him.

Spence says his Accies teammates helped him to settle in straight away and he's happy plying his trade in the Championship, even though he's not pleased with their current position, going into today's clash at his old club Dunfermline.

He said: "I've really enjoyed it. I kind of lost my way a wee bit down in England last season, and I wasn't really enjoying it, but I'm honestly really enjoying it now.

"Obviously I'm not enjoying being down at the bottom end of the table, but I fully believe in this squad that, come the end of the season, we’ll be up at the top end, where I think we will be.

"There were some good things down in England, but I think it was hard for everybody, with Covid and no fans, so it was a bit different.

"It wasn't what I thought it would be, the league.

"I just felt like I would enjoy my football, coming back up here again, and I have done that, coming to Hamilton, so hopefully it just continues.

"I have enjoyed it, the lads have made me feel really welcome in training and stuff like that, but at the end of the day you're training all week to get the three points on the Saturday, so that's what I'm gearing up for this weekend."

Spence, who was at East End Park from 2013 to 2017, is confident that Hamilton can turn around a poor start and start flying up the league table, and says there are no clear favourites yet.

He said: "It's still early days, we're only six games in, and I think we're only five points away from the play-offs anyway, so it's very tight.

"It's a very tough league and I think this season it's kind of anybody's league, really.

"I know Inverness and Killie have had good starts, but it just takes little runs in this league - two, three, four wins, and before you know it you're up there.

"We've not had the best start, we know that, but there's still a long way to go.

"We do need to start picking up points, but in saying that, we're only five or six points away from the play-offs, and that's with a bad start, so that's a wee positive there."
