'Scumbag' goes on car scratching spree down town centre street

An unknown man went on a vandalism spree scratching cars in Southport town centre leading to people calling him a 'scumbag' for the damage done.

Eight cars, parked on Princes Street, were left with deep scratches as the suspect walked down the road in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The man was recorded on CCTV walking down the street with his hood up and carrying a backpack.

Still images from the footage, posted on Facebook, showed the damage which included one vehicle's registration plate being ripped off.

A local resident, who had his own car scratched, told the ECHO: "It was a lad on his own with a backpack. In the video I put on Facebook you can see him at the start scratching the neighbours car."

The resident said: "It's not just a single line, somebody has stood there and done quite a few scratches on cars. They also pulled someone's registration plate off."

One man who commented on the post said: "What a total scumbag, why would you?

Another comment called for tougher punishments for vandalism: "When caught, they won't have to pay for the repairs, that'll come out of the car owners, maybe if there were tougher sentences crime might stop."

This isn't the first spate of car vandalism recently. Last month saw 15 cars smashed up in one night on a street in Liverpool.
