A scuba diving Youtuber has discovered the remains of two teenagers who went missing two decades ago at the bottom of a US river.
Erin Foster, 18, and Jeremy Bechtel, 17, vanished after heading out on a drive through the quiet town of Sparta, Tennessee, on April 3 2020.
Jeremy Sides, who runs the Exploring with Nug Youtube channel, became interested in the mysterious case and set out on search dives across the state's waterways.
Mr Sides -whose channel is focused on historical dive sites - found the remains at the bottom of the Calfkiller River in the same 1998 Pontiac Grand Am they were last seen in.
Recently elected local sheriff, Steve Page, heard about Mr Side's dive project while at church with Erin Foster's family, the Independent reports.
He contacted the vlogger through Facebook and advised that previous searches may have been looking in the wrong area.
So Mr Sides continued searching the state's waterways with a raft equipped with sonar.
Eventually, he found a rusted up 1998 Pontiac Grand Am in the Calfkiller River.
Cops found human remains in the vehicle, which had a number plate matching the car the pair were last seen in.
Forensics now have the task of meticulously cleaning and searching the car, which could take a number of weeks.
Only when DNA and dental records are matched can official identities be disclosed.
Speaking in a video after making the monumental discovery, Mr Sides said: “I’m lost for words. I’m so glad I could find them."
“I’m so sad that that’s where they ended up. I can’t believe it’s been over 20 years they’ve been sitting there waiting for someone to find them.”
In the clip, Mr Sides calls the sheriff to tell him he's foudn them.
“You know how big this is? …Brother, this is the case of a lifetime for me and you,” he says.
The families of the victims are aware of the discovery.
The cause of death in both cases is yet to be determined.
Cops think the teens may have lost control of the car before crashing into the river and sinking.
But investigators say foul play has not been ruled out.
The sheriff told local media that he "asked God to help me find these teens".
"To give closure to help this family finally be able to put this to rest and I think we’re going to be able to do that,” he told NewsChannel5 Nashville.
