If Rob Gronkowski, sees a ball, he catches it. If he sees an opponent, he runs through him. If he sees a cow, he eats it. And if he sees a fight on-field, he starts throwing punches.
Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Gronkowski reflected on the melee that came in the dying moments of the New England Patriots’ Super Bowl victory over the Seattle Seahawks. “I got pushed or something, and it was the last game of the year, and I was like, ‘Screw it, I’m throwing some haymakers,’” Gronkowski told Kimmel on Monday night.
Gronkowski said he was protecting his quarterback, Tom Brady. As he was shown footage of the fight, he jokingly addressed NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in the hope of avoiding a fine. “Roger, that wasn’t me,” Gronkowski said.
The Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bruce Irvin apologised for the fight on Twitter. He said he had taken action after seeing his team-mate Michael Bennett struck in the melee.
I want to apologize to all of the younger kids for my actions last night. I was trying to protect my brother and it got out of hand.

On Sunday night, Gronkowski said he bore no ill will over the fight. “It’s football, things happen. It’s all good. I mean, it’s all good. They played ball, they’re a hardworking team, and we just came out and did what we did to get the win.”
