Screams of terror as fire rips through family theme park leaving 13 dead

A killer blaze has torn through a family theme park on the first day of a national holiday in China, killing at least 13 people.

Screams of terror were heard as visitors ran for their lives as flames engulfed an exhibition centre in the Taitaishan theme park.

The fire is thought to have started in an area with ice lanterns and snow sculptures were on display.

Thick smoke could be seen in the skies above the theme park in Taiyuan city as fire crews and ambulances raced to the scene.

At least a dozen other people were taken to hospital with a range of injuries.

Thousands of tourists were in the area for the beginning of the eight-day holiday for Golden Week.

The event was started in the year 2000 by the Chinese government in a bid to encourage more tourism in the country.

It allows people to have seven or eight days of continuous holiday, so workers can make longer trips to see family or go on holiday within the country.

Taitaishan theme park is a huge tourist attraction and boasts several museums, rides including a ferris wheel and many shops and cafes.

The Work Safety Committee of the State Council, a national-level organisation in China, has launched a probe into the cause of the fire, the Daily Star reports.
