Well, it’s official: an eighth instalment of the Scream franchise is in the works, proving that the Ghostface killer simply doesn’t know when to quit.
The news was confirmed earlier today at the height of Scream 7’s ongoing box office success, with the new movie already tapping writers Lilla and Nora Zuckerman.

The sister duo are known as the showrunners of season one of Poker Face, but they also have credits on Suits and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Scream 7, which premiered in February, has become the highest-grossing film in the slasher franchise, but director Kevin Williamson said he might vacate the director’s chair for the new instalment.
“For the next Scream, I’ll probably step back and just be a part of the family again,” Williamson — who also wrote the first Scream — said last month.
Scream 7 marked a return to form for the franchise with legacy characters like Sidney (played by Neve Campbell), Gale (Courteney Cox) and Stu (Matthew Lillard). Newcomers like Anna Camp and Isobel May also joined the cast for the seventh instalment.

The franchise has typically rolled out in trilogy storylines, meaning Scream 7 would theoretically kickstart an all-new era for Ghostface and the gang.
But Williamson played coy on the trilogy chatter in an interview with PEDESTRIAN.TV. “The franchise has always worked in threes,” Williamson said. “But whether or not this is a trilogy remains to be seen,” he added.
Campbell, meanwhile, said she “can’t tell you” about the trilogy plans and said the team behind the franchise was “focussing on Scream 7 right now”.
Scream 8 is very early in development at the moment, so there’s no news on the release date front, but keep your eyes peeled for updates (and for Ghostface!).
