Scrapyard boss must repay £300,000 after being caught on CCTV shopping at Harrods

A scrapyard boss and his wife have been ordered to repay nearly £300,000 after being caught on CCTV shopping at Harrods.

The scrapyard crime boss was seen browsing luxurious items with his wife at the popular department store.

Footage showed the couple browsing items by high end fashion designer Christian Louboutin, the Manchester Evening News reports.

Their lavish lifestyle - which included a Range Rover and jewellery - was funded by crime.

Smith and his wife had also invested in property and land, a court heard.

The couple had each benefited from around £1 million each from criminality, Preston Crown Court heard.

CCTV footage of the pair shopping in Harrods has been released after a hearing in which they were told they must pay back nearly £300,000.

The Smiths were both involved in a multi-million pound stolen goods crime network which orchestrated the theft and sale of high value items across the north of England between 2016 and 2018.

Items such as cars, clothes, trucks and vans and plant machinery were stolen from victims in Greater Manchester, Carlisle, Leeds and Bradford before being sold on.

The married couple were jailed in August 2019 after admitting conspiracy to handle stolen goods.

Tommy Smith, 43, who owned a scrapyard in Great Harwood, Hyndburn, was jailed for six and a half years, while Mary Smith was jailed for 15 months.

Now, following a Proceeds of Crime investigation, the couple have been ordered to pay back some of their gains.

A judge ordered Tommy to re-pay £55,000 within three months.

If he fails to do so, he could face a further 18 months in prison.

His wife Mary must pay back £225,000 within three months or face a 30-month custodial sentence.

After the hearing, Detective Sergeant Andrew Osbaldeston, of Lancashire Police, said: "This POCA hearing brings to a conclusion a four-year investigation and I would like to thank everybody involved in this process.

"Through their criminal activity, Tommy and Mary Smith were profiting from the hard work of their victims to live a luxury lifestyle.

"Although we have not been able to recover the full benefit amount from them at this stage, this order is indefinite so we have the ability to seize future assets off them until the full debt is paid.

"It is important to point out that this money will be used to re-pay the victims, who through no fault of their own, were left out of pocket because of the greed of all those involved in the conspiracy."
