Scrapping Premier League season is 'almost inevitable' due to coronavirus says lawyer

It is "almost inevitable" that the Premier League season will be cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic if games don't again at the beginning of April.

That's the view of leading sports lawyer Richard Cramer, who predicts the impact of the virus on football in Britain will be like that of the two World Wars.

All football was suspended last week until at least April 3, with no Premier League fixtures currently set to take place until the following day.

However, there is still huge uncertainty over whether matches will be able to go ahead that soon, with the likely impact of the coronavirus outbreak not yet known.

Indeed, many observers have questioned whether the rest of the football season will be able to resume, or whether it will end up being abandoned.

The prospect of scrapping the season has raised questions over what would happen in terms of the title race, with Liverpool a whopping 25 points ahead having dominated the Premier League all season.

Even less clear cut is what would happen with teams battling relegation, and those chasing promotion such as the Championship's top two Leeds United and West Brom .

And Cramer says if football doesn't start again in early April, football's authorities may have no choice but to declare the season void - which would be 'devastating' for many clubs.

"If they get the games going by the beginning of April, I think we should be all right," Cramer told Sky Sports News.

"But if we go through to May or June, it's almost inevitable - it's almost the equivalent of what happened in the world wars - that the season just has to be cancelled and they start all over again.

"It's obviously devastating for the likes of Leeds United and West Brom. Those clubs are on the verge of promotion. Also Liverpool, obviously.

"It's not a great thought, but they will have to abide by what the majority say and what decision is eventually made by the board of directors."
