Scrambler yob admits police attack after officer hit in head with brick

A scrambler yob has admitted being part of an attack when a brick hurled at a police car hit an officer in the head.

PC John Prescott was attending an incident in Garston when two men on an off-road motorbike approached his marked vehicle.

The brick was thrown through the rear windscreen as the officer travelled along Speke Road, near the junction with Horrocks Avenue.

Police said the brick hit PC Prescott, who suffered a head injury, and the motorbike sped off in the direction of Lowbridge Court.

The officer was taken to hospital after the incident, at around 3pm on Friday, February 7 this year, with a non-life threatening injury.

CCTV, forensic and witness enquiries were launched and officers appealed for information about the orange and black off-road bike.

Ryan Blake, 24, of Hughes Street, Garston, was arrested and initially accused of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent.

However, he was later charged with the lesser offence of assault causing actual bodily harm, plus a charge of criminal damage.

Blake denied both offences and was due to stand trial at Liverpool Crown Court this week.

Before the trial opened he indicated he would like to change one of his pleas and admitted assault causing actual bodily harm.

Frank Dillon, prosecuting, said this was acceptable to the Crown and he would invite the court to lie the charge of criminal damage on the file.

Blake admits being on the bike and that the brick was thrown through the window, injuring the officer, but does not admit that he threw it.

However, the prosecution has been brought on the basis the attack was a joint enterprise between him and the other unknown man.

Judge Anil Murray agreed to adjourn the case so a victim impact statement could be obtained and remanded Blake on further bail

Blake will next appear for his sentencing on September 3.

Speaking at the time of the incident, Detective Inspector Debbie Tipton branded the attack a "disgrace".

She told the ECHO: "To be the victim of such an incident while going about your job is disgraceful and we are carrying out a number of enquiries to find those responsible and bring them to justice.

"The reckless actions of these individuals could have had tragic consequences and it is only by sheer good luck that the officer involved wasn't more seriously injured.

"Emergency services are on duty to assist members of the public every hour of every day and it is simply unacceptable for them to be subject to such behaviour.

"An investigation is ongoing and I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident, saw a scrambler bike making off from the scene, or has any CCTV or dashcam footage to please get in touch."
