'Scrambler yob' accused of hitting policeman in head with brick

An alleged scrambler yob is accused of throwing a brick through a police car window and hitting an officer in the head.

PC John Prescott was attending an incident in Garston when two men on an off-road motorbike approached his vehicle, on Friday, February 7 this year.

One of the men hurled a brick through the rear windscreen of his marked police car, which was travelling along Speke Road, near to the junction with Horrocks Avenue.

Merseyside Police said the brick hit PC Prescott, who suffered a head injury, and the motorbike sped off in the direction of Lowbridge Court.

The force said the officer was taken to hospital after the incident, at around 3pm, and described the injury as non-life threatening.

CCTV, forensic and witness enquiries were launched and officers appealed for information about the orange and black off-road bike.

Ryan Blake, 24, of Hughes Street, Garston, was arrested and initially charged with attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent.

However, he appeared at Liverpool Crown Court charged with the lesser offence of assault causing actual bodily harm and criminal damage.

Blake, with short brown hair, produced on a video link from HMP Liverpool, pleaded not guilty to both allegations during a brief hearing.

Iain Criddle, prosecuting, said a trial would be estimated to last two to three days.

Judge Brian Cummings, QC, said it would take place on August 10 this year and remanded Black in custody until that date.

Speaking at the time of the incident, Detective Inspector Debbie Tipton told the ECHO: "To be the victim of such an incident while going about your job is disgraceful and we are carrying out a number of enquiries to find those responsible and bring them to justice.

"The reckless actions of these individuals could have had tragic consequences and it is only by sheer good luck that the officer involved wasn't more seriously injured.

"Emergency Services are on duty to assist members of the public every hour of every day and it is simply unacceptable for them to be subject to such behaviour.

"An investigation is ongoing and I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident, saw a scrambler bike making off from the scene, or has any CCTV or dashcam footage to please get in touch."
