Two 22-year-old men, who were both riding the off-road bike, were airlifted to Aintree Hospital, one in a serious condition and one in a critical condition.

Specialist officers are now supporting the family of the male who died as a result of his injuries.

The second male remains in a serious condition.

The driver of the Astra fled the scene in the direction of The Birches.

On Tuesday, detectives arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with the crash.

The 27-year-old, from Huyton, has since been released on conditional bail.

Detective Inspector Tony O’Brien said: “Although a man has been arrested in connection with this serious and tragic incident, our enquiries continue.

"We still want to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision, recorded anything on dashcam or home CCTV, or has since heard anything. What you feel is a small detail could be vital as this investigation moves forward."
