Scouting report on new Cardinals CB Robert Alford

The Arizona Cardinals added a pair of former Atlanta Falcons defenders this week after they were cut by Atlanta. The first was veteran cornerback Robert Alford.

He signed on a three-year deal, all but securing him as the team’s second starting cornerback for a couple of seasons.

What is there to know about Alford? I checked in with sister site Falcons Wire site manager Tim Weaver, who gave me this scouting report on Alford:

He’s mostly inconsistent. He has some very good games and some abysmal ones in coverage. He has pretty decent ball skills but he gets lost too often. Pass interference penalties have been a big problem for him — he gets beat over the top too much and has no choice but to grab onto them. He was just plain terrible this season but the whole secondary was, really. I think he can bounce back and be an average CB with a change of scenery.

With a contract averaging up to $8 million a year and guaranteeing him $13.5 million, the Cardinals hope Alford can be a little bit more than an average corner.

But considering the merry-go-round of players at the position over the years, maybe average is a decent start.
