Scousers reminisce about how much they loved Rhyl Sun Centre as new SC2 nears opening

Decades worth of memories are being revisited as Wales’ newest leisure attraction SC2 nears opening.

The brand new £15 million water park and adventure centre is Rhyl’s answer to the long lost Sun Centre, which was demolished in 2016.

When it opened back in 1980, the Sun Centre was the largest indoor pool in Europe at the time.

However, after 34 years the news was announced that the centre would be pulled down to make way for a revamp of Rhyl’s waterfront.

Now SC2 is hoping to fill the massive Sun Centre hole in many lives, and plenty of Scousers can’t wait.

After the ECHO announced SC2 will reopen in spring, many readers started reminiscing about the ‘good old days’ at Rhyl Sun Centre. One Echo commenter said: “Great news just the fairground reinstated now, happy childhood memories.”

While another added: “No monorail ??? that was the best bit ... I preferred the SC the way it used to be, proper pool with the wave machine.”

Back in the eighties and nineties, people would spend hours playing on the famous octopus slide, the monorail cars and in the wave pool.

Taking to Facebook, Shell Whittaker New said: “If this new centre doesnt have indoor rain its not rhyl sun centre”.

Louise Lacy added: “No mono rail? Gutted! Used to love that.”

Amanda O'Hanlon commented: “Had many a great day at Rhyl sun centre. I’ll never forget the day the fire alarm went off and we had to stand outside in our swimwear.

“Luckily my dad had not locked the car (it was safe back then!) and we got our coats out to keep us warm.”

While Lee Mcmilan said: “Plenty of rashes off the hover boards riding the waves over the years as a kid.”

And George Hose added: “Had some great times in the original Sun Centre . Many a happy start to our holidays were spent there.”
