Scouse nan impressed by granddaughter's incredible moves

A woman from Liverpool has spoken of her surprise after a video of her jiving in her grandma Joan's kitchen went viral.

Two weeks ago, actress Saffron McConville posted a video of her jive dancing to 'Rock Around The Clock' by Bill Haley & The Comets in front of her delighted gran Joan to the popular social media site TikTok.

The video, captioned "Nan used to jive in Liverpool and I asked her to judge mine as she taught me to dance" has since been viewed by 890,000 people and 'liked' over 92,000 times.

The 23-year-old from Anfield (@havealaughwithsaff on TikTok) told The Echo she "never expected the video to go viral" and feels "overwhelmed" with the response.

The Liverpool Media Academy graduate said: "I filmed the TikTok with my Nan as we have always loved a good dance whenever I visit her.

"I hadn’t seen her in seven weeks as I now live in Newcastle. I decided to put on her favourite songs ‘Rock around the clock’ and ‘Runaround sue’ to cheer her up.

"She calls me ‘her little entertainer’. I wanted the video as a memory and to share with people how much she means to me."

Describing her gran Joan as "the original jiver of the 60s" she spoke of how her she first introduced her to the dance style.

Saffron said: "Nan taught me from an early age. she’d put songs on like the drifters, James brown, chubby checker, Bill Haley and Elvis. We’d dance for hours until my mum would finish work or I’d entertain her whilst she’d have a cup of tea.

"I think my nana is proud that I pursued a career in the arts as it’s stemmed from her."

The video struck a chord with viewers with one commenter saying: "Why do Liverpudlian nans all know how to jive to this song?"

Another said: "This is the best thing I've seen. My nan used to dance at The Grafton [Ballroom]. See if your nan remembers it."

Another commented: "Scousers have the best [jive] tutors ever. The older generation in Liverpool were the best jivers ever. They amaze me!"

And what does Joan think of her new internet fame?

Saffron said: "My Nan thinks it’s amazing how many views it’s got. She’s happy that it has cheered so many people up and put smiles on so many peoples faces."
