Scottish zoo welcomes birth of rare wild kitten - and it's adorable

A Scottish Zoo has welcomed a 'functionally extinct' rare wild kitten.

Five Sisters Zoo in West Calder is celebrating the birth of the adorable Scottish Wildcat.

The breed is one of the most endangered cat populations in the world after becoming endangered in 2018.

The kitten was born to parents Morag and Fletcher but given their elusive nature, has only been seen a handful of times.

Keepers are yet to name the animal as they do not know the sex yet.

The lockdown means Zoo visits are impossible leaving the facility without income (Supplied)

The zoo said: "We are delighted to announce the birth of a rare Scottish Wildcat kitten here at Five Sisters Zoo.

"The breeding programme that we are proud to be part of is a lifeline for this fragile population and without help from conservationists and zoos, would be dangerously close to disappearing completely."

It comes after coronavirus forced the facility to shut its doors leaving it struggling to support the animals.

The lockdown means visits are impossible leaving the facility without income.

Now they are urging the public to support them by buying plants from them and contributing to their fundraisiers.
