Scottish writers scoop two prizes at top awards ceremony

TWO Scottish authors have picked up prizes at a top awards ceremony.

Writer in residence at the University of Edinburgh Michael Pedersen’s won in the poetry category at the Books Are My Bag Readers Awards for his poetry collection The Cat Prince & Other Poems.

Elsewhere, comedian Fern Brady picked up the non-fiction prize for her book Strong Female Character.

Commenting on her win, Brady (below) said: “I’m so surprised to have won this amongst such an incredible shortlist.

“I’m also grateful for the phenomenal support I received from booksellers from very early on. This prize is indebted to them.”

The winners were voted for by readers and booksellers, which Pedersen said made the win all the more special.

“To have had this book voted for by booksellers, readers and the public beyond is the most gorgeous accolade a writer could be gifted,” he said.

“As someone who performs, loiters and lolls in the majesty of bookshops, the support they and their readers have given me here is life-and-love affirming.”

Next month, Pedersen will hold an in-conversation event with the former first minister Nicola Sturgeon, where they will discuss the books that sustained her during her time in the role.

The former FM is currently in the process of writing her own memoir.
