Scottish Women's Institute members put work on display for annual show

Scottish Women’s Institute members put their work on display at their annual show in Linlithgow Academy.

The items on display demonstrated the wide range of skills of Rural members, from baking to crafts and floral art, and there were a large number of children’s and teen entries.

This year there was a special display of items created by the Dippers, a group of youngsters who are learning new crafts at their monthly meetings.

Two of the Dippers won prizes: Eilidh Armstrong won Hazel’s fabric prize for her pot holder and Catherine Hill won the thread counter prize for her knitted hat.

Also on display were knitted baby items which are being donated to St John’s Hospital, no-sew blankets for the Linus Project and Trauma Teddies which will be distributed to Police Scotland.

During the morning of show day, judges from other federations began the difficult task of judging the many entries. The show was open in the afternoon to SWI members, their families and friends, who admired the display of work and enjoyed the teas. The prizegiving ceremony was led by federation chairman Christine Barton and trophies were presented by Kathleen Dalyell.

Also present were several past federation chairmen and guests from neighbouring federations.

Chairman Christine Barton congratulated all the prizewinners and everyone who had entered and said that the show had been a wonderful display of members’ talents.

This was her last show as federation chairman as she will be stepping down at the AGM in May.

Senior vice-chairman Aileen Borrowman gave a vote of thanks to everyone involved in making the show such a success then the raffle was drawn and the show drew to a close.

The Crichton Trophy for the institute gaining most points overall was won by Kirkliston, with runner-up Blackness receiving the Blackness Trophy. Kirkliston Institute were very successful as they also won the Anderson Trophy for floral art, the Caldwell Trophy for most points in the novice section and the Gallacher Garrow Trophy for most points in classes five to 32.

The McDowell Trophy for the institute gaining most points for the institute effort (the table) was presented to Ecclesmachan and the runner-up was Blackridge, who won the Jubilee trophy.

Whitburn won the Torphichen Trophy for their Ladies Who Lunch-themed tray and Livingston Craigshill were presented with the Turnbull Trophy for their Breakfast In Bed novice tray. Ecclesmachan also won the Lamont Vase for the small institute with the most points.
