Scottish water retailer pledges to cut carbon footprint by 20%

An Edinburgh-based water retailer has pledged to reduce its carbon footprint by 20% during the next 12 months.

Business Stream will introduce new measures to make its operation more efficient.

These include reviewing its vehicle fleet, adapting its paper use and printing processes, re-evaluating its business travel policy and working with contractors to ensure they are taking steps to limit their emissions.

It aims to maintain, where possible, some of the reductions that have been achieved naturally during lockdown.

The announcement follows its parent company, Scottish Water, announcing its aim to be net zero by 2040.

Business Stream has also committed to working with Scottish Water to deliver a large tree planting programme to help lock away carbon. It is currently looking to identify suitable sites around Scotland.

Jo Dow, chief executive at Business Stream, was appointed earlier this year as chair of business in the community Scotland’s climate action group.

She stated: “We know it’s an ambitious target, but we have a responsibility to our customers, our people and the communities we operate within to play our part in helping to protect the planet.”
