Scottish Water insists Ayrshire drinking supply is safe following concerns over taste and odour

Ayrshire's drinking water IS safe to consume, officials at Scottish Water insisted today.

The company was responding to a number of complaints in the region which reported "a taste or odour" in the supply.

Bosses said investigations carried out had found no reason to suggest contamination.

And they stressed water was still safe for customers to drink.

It follows a string of social media posts from worried residents voicing concerns.

It's understood complaints have been received from across the KA postcode region.

And investigations have been underway to rule out health implications for the public.

A Scottish Water spokesman said: "Following a small number of customers in parts of Ayrshire contacting Scottish Water to report a taste or odour issue with their water we have checked our infrastructure, including water treatment works and water mains, and taken samples of water at various points on our network for scientific analysis in our laboratories.

"We can confirm that all of our infrastructure is working normally and that the water in our network continues to meet all the strict regulatory requirements and can be used as normal by customers.

"As a precautionary measure, we will continue to monitor the situation."
