Scottish Water apologise for dirty water whilst improvement works continue

Scottish Water says it is continuing to work "as hard as possible" to help customers still experiencing water discolouration in parts of Lanarkshire.

The water board says discolouration has been caused by naturally occurring manganese levels in the water supply.

They say that, because parts of the West of Scotland have had the lowest levels of rainfall for 160 years, reservoir levels in parts of Lanarkshire are at the lowest they've been for this century.

Reservoir levels across Scotland are now at 57 per cent after being at 98 per cent in early April.

In Lanarkshire, the Daer and Camps reservoirs, which have been affected by the manganese issue leading to discoloured water, are currently 37 per cent and 33 per cent full respectively.

Daer reservoir has not been as low since 1999, Camps reservoir since 2005.

We are managing our infrastructure in the area to maintain normal volumes of water supplies.

Kes Juskowiak from Scottish Water told Lanarkshire Live: “There has been some rainfall recently, but it has not been heavy or prolonged, so has not improved reservoir levels in Lanarkshire or elsewhere.

“While we have implemented a number of actions to help mitigate the impact this is having on the appearance of the water supply in some parts of Lanarkshire, there is still a need for significant rainfall to allow the discolouration issue to be fully resolved.

“Meanwhile, we are monitoring the water supply closely and continue with rigorous sampling and testing programmes throughout. We would remind those customers still affected that, while their water might not look normal yet, it can be used for drinking, cooking, bathing and showering.

“We are continuing to liaise with the Drinking Water Quality Regulator and NHS Lanarkshire on this matter and the Consultant in Public Health Medicine at NHS Lanarkshire has confirmed that they are satisfied the water is safe to use.”

Mr Juskowiak apologised for the "inconvenience" and thanked customers for their "patience and understanding".
