Scottish Twitter fumes at McDonald's decision to reopen none of its Scots branches

Scots have taken to Twitter to fume at the news McDonald’s will be reopening no branches in Scotland during the coronavirus lockdown.

The fast-food giant announced 15 restaurants would be opening its doors for delivery only from May 13.

Its decision is part of a move to ‘slowly, but safely’ return McDonald's to towns and cities up and down the UK amid the virus outbreak.

But disgruntled Scots junk food aficionados were quick to clock that all of the branches reopening are based south of the border - which opened up quite the discussion.

Some on Twitter used the news to renew calls for Scottish independence while others went as far to claim that McDonald’s mascot Ronald McDonald ‘hates’ Scotland.

Twitter user @Zahratf1 wrote: “Is McDonald’s seriously telling me that not even one of their 15 restaurants is opening in Scotland?!”

Meanwhile another said: “Unilateral Declaration of Independence (for Scotland) since all the McDonald’s that are reopening are in the South East of England.

And Amy Taylor commented: “All I want is a big fat McDonald’s and now the only I’ll get one is if I move to Luton, where there’s three open. Ronald McDonald hates Scotland.”

User Kenzie added: “I’m furious at McDonald’s opening up branches everywhere except Scotland? How is that acceptable? Been craving a McDonald’s for weeks.”

@Beafilms wrote: “So McDonald’s are opening like 15 restaurants next week and they’re only opening up places in England. Typical McDonald’s - open some in Scotland.”

But the firm gave reassurances that McDonald's will reopen in Scotland in the future.

It said that each of the 15 restaurants that are opening are within close proximity of its distribution centre in Hemel Hempstead.

A spokesperson for the firm: "These 15 restaurants were chosen for their proximity to our distribution centre as we slowly but safely seek to reopen our restaurants and restart our supply chain.

"Rest assured we are working hard to reopen more restaurants across the UK and Ireland at the right time."
