Scottish travel expert's 'survival kit' for flying on plane during coronavirus

A Scottish travel expert has provided holidaymakers with a safety checklist for flying on a plane during the coronavirus pandemic.

Holidaymakers eyeing up a summer getaway in the sun should be prepared when travelling through an airport and boarding a flight in a bid to stop the spread of the deadly bug.

YouTuber Ruairidh Mason, who moved from Edinburgh to Majorca five years ago, has been posting regular travel updates amid the virus as travel corridors and quarantine rules change every week.

In a clip, he shared his top tips for staying as safe as possible for holidaymakers who choose to jet away.

From masks and hand sanitiser to which seat you should book, the expert runs through the must-haves to ensure you are prepared for the flight.

Book a window seat

Ruairidh advises to select a window seat during the booking process, even if you have to pay a bit more

Having a wall on one side dramatically decreases the number of people who will get within a 2metre radius.

Social distance in the airport

He added: "This includes the absolute party that is check-in and security screening."

Wear a mask

Wear a well-fitted N95 respirator mask at all times, unless eating or drinking.

The vlogger joked: "And that includes shouting and screaming at the person who just told you your coffee and bagel will cost 58 euros."

Bring your own food

Ruairidh alos suggest to bring your own food in sealed tupperware.

He said: "It's cheaper, inevitably tastier and you won't be handling products that have come into contact from go knows where."

Pack a survival kit

In a ziplock bag, carry:

  • Disinfecting handwipes
  • Gel hand sanitiser
  • Wash cloth that's been soaked in water and bleach
  • More ziplock bags

The handwipes come in useful for cleaning the seat buckles, arm rests and the tray table.

Gel sanitiser, while not as good as soap and water, is a great substitute for people on the move and should be used regularly.

The bleached cloth can be used to wipe down all your other cleaning products and the bags themselves.

"It does all sound a little overkill but that' exactly what you're aiming for right now," he said.

Try not to use the toilet

Try and use the toilet before go board the plane and try not to use the toilet mid-flight.

He said: "Going to the toilet will mean touching things that shouldn't be touched and passing lots of people that shouldn't be passed."

For journeys of up to four or five hours, this should be doable for most people, he said.

If you do not to go to the loo, make sure to wipe down surfaces and wash your hands thoroughly after.
