Scottish trade envoy says he was tortured by Chinese authorities

The Scottish Development International worker who was detained in China has told how he was tortured by secret police.

Simon Cheng, a former employee of Britain's Hong Kong consulate whose job was to attract investment to Scotland, said he was beaten, deprived him of sleep and chained up and interrogators they pressed him for information about activists leading the pro-democracy protests.

Speaking publicly for the first time Cheng, a Hong Kong citizen, told the BBC: "I was shackled, blindfolded and hooded."  He added that they would "ask whether the consulate instructed me to mingle with the protest. They regard me as the mastermind that represents the UK."

Chen, 28, was held by Chinese police as he returned by train from Shenzhen on the mainland to his home in Hong Kong in August. The official People’s Daily reported police as saying Cheng had been detained for 15 days for “solicitation of prostitution”.

British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab condemned China's treatment of Cheng, which he said "amounts to torture".

Raab told the Wall Street Journal he had summoned the Chinese ambassador "to express our outrage," adding: "I have made clear we expect the Chinese authorities to investigate and hold those responsible to account."
