Scottish theatres reopening: Rehearsals to begin again from Monday

Nicola Sturgeon confirmed today that Edinburgh theatres and music venues can reopen for rehearsals from next Monday (August 24).

She also said that from the same date, live events like concerts and comedy will be allowed to take place outdoors with enhanced hygiene and physical distancing.

Speaking at today’s briefing the First Minister confirmed that Scotland was not leaving phase three but mentioned some dates for future easing of rules – including re-opening of indoor theatres and music venues.

She said that, after the latest three-week review of lockdown measures, Scotland will not move into phase four yet and will remain in phase three for the foreseeable future, possibly past the next review point too.

However, she has confirmed a number of changes that will still come into effect from 24 August and 14 September and which phase three restrictions will remain for the foreseeable future.

Said she hoped that indoor cultural venues such as theatres and live music venues will be open from then too - and can reopen for preparation and rehearsals from August 24.

So while actors, musicians and behind the scenes crews will be able to start getting ready from Monday, the curtain won’t be going up until at least September 14.

The First Minister also named September 14 as the date she hoped sports stadiums would be able to re-open.

Ms Sturgeon also announced an intention to give new powers to police and local authorities.

“TheScottish Government has powers under emergency legislation to issue directions in respect of a class of premises – for example, to close all pubs in a particular post code,” she said.

“We intend to give local authorities the power to act in respect of individual, specific premises that are breaching guidelines and risking transmission of the virus.”
