Scottish teen girl dies from Covid-19 despite having no existing medical issues

A Scottish teenage girl has died from Covid-19, despite having no underlying health conditions.

The teen, from Ayrshire, becomes the seventh case in Scotland of someone passing away under the age of 20. She was believed to have been between 15 and 19.

This is also the third case in Scotland of someone dying from the virus despite having no current medical conditions, as the Scottish Sun reports.

This joins the two other casualties, one of which coronavirus was raised as a contributing factor in the death of a baby girl in Glasgow just before Christmas last year.

The other victim was a five to nine year-old boy from Aberdeen, who passed in February.

According to Public Health Scotland, 33 children under the age of 18 were admitted to hospital with Covid last week, up from six compared to the previous week.

In total, Scotland suffered 133 Covid related deaths last week. Three quarters of these casualties were aged over 75.

The Scottish Government said of the girl: "Every death during this pandemic is a tragedy and our thoughts and condolences are with this person’s family."

The tragedy is ill-timed as one of Nicola Sturgeon's pandemic advisors says kids as young as five should be given the vaccine in the UK.

Professor Devi Sridhar, Edinburgh University's public global; health expert, says the rollout should be extended to under-12's as the virus can be "quite a serious infection" for them.

Asked if she thought the UK will follow suit after the US approved vaccination of 5-11 year-olds, she replied: "Well I hope they will."

She said: "This is not for the wider benefits of societies. It's the benefit to the child. Luckily, we have a vaccine with Pfizer now that is seen as safe and effective."

Prof Sridhar said jab take-up would be a "choice, using informed consent" for parents if vaccines get approved for the younger age group in Scotland.
