Scottish teen acting star Frankie Corio wins big at Critics Circle Awards

SCOTTISH actress Frankie Corio is being rewarded for her role in the Oscar-nominated film Aftersun.

Corio picked up Best Young British/Irish actor at the Critics Circle Awards in London on Sunday night.

The 13-year-old was congratulated by Cate Blanchett, who reportedly called the teenager from Livingstone “a rising star”.

She was also pictured alongside Blanchett, Florence Pugh and Michelle Yeoh after picking up her award, rubbing shoulders with some of Hollywood’s most acclaimed performers.

Frankie's mum, Leona Corio, took to Twitter to congratulate her daughter.

She said: "Yessss!!! My baby won! Wish I was there with her! She was up against some great young performers!"

Her co-star Paul Mescal was also at the event where he picked up the Philip French award for breakthrough British/Irish filmmaker on behalf of Edinburgh-born Charlotte Wells.

The film follows Corio’s character Sophie on holiday in Turkey with her father played by Mescal and has been widely praised by critics.

It comes after Mescal was nominated for Best Actor at the upcoming Academy Awards.

Speaking after the announcement of his nomination he said: “This is truly a special moment for everyone involved in Aftersun. To be recognised by the Academy is such an insane honour and I'm so utterly grateful.

“I want to dedicate this nomination to my two friends Charlotte and Frankie who I love dearly! This is bananas, thank you!”
