Scottish teachers accept 13 per cent pay rise after thousands joined strike action

Teachers across Scotland have overwhelmingly accepted a 13 per cent pay proposal

Members of the country’s largest teaching union, the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS), voted to accept the Scottish Government’s deal staggered over three years – bringing talk of further strike action to an end.

It offers a three per cent rise backdated to last April, seven per cent from next month, and a further three per cent from April 2020 – a total increase of 13.51 per cent.

The deal also includes additional commitments to tackle workload, supporting teacher professional development and enhancing the leadership programme.

EIS general secretary Larry Flanagan said the union’s Value Education, Value Teachers campaign had been a significant factor in securing the deal.

Deputy First Minister John Swinney said the outcome was positive and reflected the partnership approach the Government had taken with local government and the professional associations.
