Scottish swimmer with terminal cancer issues tearful plea to Burnham in BBC interview

  • Commonwealth Games swimmer Archie Goodburn, 25, who was diagnosed with inoperable brain tumours two years ago, has made a passionate plea to Andy Burnham for increased government funding for brain cancer research.
  • Scottish swimmer Goodburn, who reached the 50m breaststroke final last week, highlighted that brain cancer is the deadliest cancer for children and adults under 40, yet has received only 1% of the government's cancer research budget over the past 24 years.
  • Appearing on BBC Breakfast , he tearfully urged for a national brain cancer lead and investment, noting that crucial clinical trials available abroad are not accessible in the UK.
  • He criticised the recently enacted Rare Cancers Bill as inadequate, explaining that its two part-time roles for 14 cancer types amount to only 36 days of work annually, insufficient to drive significant change.
  • Goodburn, whose own ability to compete was aided by a new treatment drug, continues to campaign for greater government action, stressing the unbearable suffering caused by the disease.
