Scottish SPCA in Lanarkshire rescue snake from cooker

The Scottish SPCA in Lanarkshire have rescued a snake from a cooker.

The animal welfare charity, with a rescue centre in Hamilton, was alerted to the cornsnake after a member of the public spotted it in the oven tray of the brand new household appliance in Cumbernauld.

Luckily, they were able to dismantle the oven and rescue the serpent who was trapped inside.

Scottish SPCA animal rescue officer Louise Hume said: “Only about six inches of the snake was visible on the oven tray, the rest was hidden somewhere inside the oven!

“With assistance from my colleague, inspector Jack Marshall, and the member of the public we were able to take the oven apart and rescue the snake.

“Thankfully the oven was new and the family spotted the snake before it was turned on so it was uninjured after its ordeal.

“Neither we, nor the family have any idea how the snake came to be in the appliance.

“The snake has now been taken to one of our rescue and rehoming centres where it’s receiving the care it needs from our dedicated team. The team have named the reptile, who is around two and a half feet long, Cob.

“If anyone finds an animal in distress they should call the Scottish SPCA animal helpline on 03000 999 999.”
