Scottish SPCA appeal for owner after cockatiel found on sea adventure

A cockatiel bird has been found a long way from home after he took refuge on a shocked fisherman’s boat.

The Scottish SPCA have now issued an appeal to find the owner after the stranded bird landed on the boat out at sea near Troon on Friday (September 18).

The boat was around 10 miles from the shore so the bird- dubbed HeiHei after the character in the movie Moana- was a long way from land.

The cockatiel is in good health and is now in the care of the Scottish SPCA’s Ayrshire Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre.

Scottish SPCA animal rescue officer, Sheena MacTaggart, said: “This was a very unusual rescue; I’ve never been contacted about a bird finding its way so far out at sea.

“Thank goodness the boat was there so the bird found somewhere to rest.

“He had no obvious injuries, and was given some water and food before being taken to our centre in Ayrshire.

“We have named him HeiHei after the bird in the film Moana who stows away on her boat. We thought it was very fitting!

“HeiHei does have leg rings but we have been unable to trace his owner.

“If anyone recognises HeiHei, please contact our animal helpline on 03000 999 999.”
