The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after two rats were found abandoned in a layby on Birks Road in Law on March 2.
Scotland’s animal welfare charity was alerted to the incident after a member of the public discovered the rats while they were out walking their dog at around 6.30pm.
The rodents had been left in a cardboard Pets at Home carrier lined with straw and paper bedding.
Scottish SPCA inspector Jack Marshall said: “These rats are incredibly lucky that they were found.
“Although they are rats, they are domesticated animals and would not have survived the elements and predators in the wild.
“We appreciate that the person who left them may have intended them to be found but this is not the right way to give up an animal if you can no longer care for them.
“The rats have now been taken to one of our animal rescue and rehoming centres where they are receiving the care and attention they need. Thankfully, despite their ordeal, they appear to be in good health.
“We would like to find out what happened to these rats. If anyone recognises them or has any information on how they came to be in this situation they can contact our confidential animal helpline on 03000 999 999.”
