Scottish shoppers encouraged to shop safely online ahead of Black Friday sales

Scots have been encouraged to shop safely online as National Consumer Week gets underway, with record numbers expected to shop online this year.

With the Black Friday sales starting Christmas shopping season for many next week, Advice Direct Scotland - which runs consumeradvice.scot - also encouraged shoppers to go local, as many small retailers are turning to the internet for the first time.

It offered tips for online shoppers, including: use a credit card if spending more than £100 so purchases are protected under the Consumer Credit Act; avoid scams by checking the website is secure and that it has a valid UK address, returns policy and terms and conditions; and checking prices on similar items with other retailers before making final decisions.

Business minister Jamie Hepburn said: “As our shopping habits adapt and change it is important that everyone has the information they need to avoid online scams, identify unfair delivery costs and ensure they get a good service.

“This year, National Consumer Week is focused on raising awareness of these issues and what people can do if something does go wrong – offering straightforward advice that could save money and disappointment."

Councillor Kelly Parry, chair of Trading Standards Scotland’s governance board, added: “Since the beginning of the pandemic, more and more consumers have been shopping online and this trend looks set to continue over the Christmas period.

“For many people, budgets will be particularly tight this year and it can be tempting to click on a social media advert or unfamiliar website offering deals on big brands or in-demand items - unfortunately, more people have also fallen victim to online scammers who set up fake websites or stores on online marketplaces in an attempt to steal their personal and financial details."
