Scottish schools will not return on normal full-time basis before August, confirms Nicola Sturgeon

Schools will not return in Scotland on a full-time basis before August, Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed today.

The First Minister ruled out pupils going back to class as normal before the end of the traditional summer holidays.

Speaking at her daily media briefing, Ms Sturgeon said the Scottish Government was working to reach a "consensus view" on when the right time would be to send pupils and staff back to class.

She said: "It is a reasonable thing for me to say right now - bearing in mind these decisions have not been taken in any final sense - but it is not going to be the case that schools are back to normal in any way, shape or form this side of the summer holidays.

"We are of course discussing whether it is possible for any pupils to go back in that timeframe, but if it is - and we haven't concluded that yet - it's likely to be on a very limited basis."

It comes as the coronavirus death toll in Scotland rose to 2,053 people.

A further 143 Scots have now tested positive for Covid-19, taking the total confirmed cases to 14,260.
