Scottish rugby star drops in to surprise stunned Lanarkshire schoolgirl

A Wishaw schoolgirl got the chance to meet her rugby hero after a Scotland star popped into her home to drop of a match shirt.

Seven-year-old Matilda Burnett was selected as a virtual mascot for the recent Scotland vs. Japan match at Murrayfield.

Unfortunately, due to COVID guidelines, she was unable to meet the Scotland stars, including her favourite player Jamie Bhatti.

However, after getting in touch through social media, Jamie dropped by to the family home in Netherton and presented Matilda with the shirt he wore during the recent match against Tonga.

Proud dad Michael told Lanarkshire Live : “We had a great day at Murrayfield and Matilda was able to video a message for the team that was played on the big screens.

“We had put up a post on Instagram about the day and Jamie got in touch to see if he could give her a wee memento of her day.

“I was expecting a signed autograph or a programme sent through the post but Jamie messaged us back to see if he could stop by the house.

“He came in and had a really good chat with Matilda and our other kids Aaron and Phoebe.

“Jamie was really down to earth. It would have been easy for him to stick something through the post, but he really made Matilda’s day.”

Matilda, together with her dad, mum Christine, brother and sister are all members of Dalziel Rugby Club and enjoy playing as well as watching the game, having attended games at Murrayfield and Scotstoun - home of the Glasgow Warriors.

Michael added: “We’ve been to Murrayfield before and it’s a fantastic stadium with a great atmosphere.

“The mini section we’ve got at the club is doing really well.

“At the moment we have around 120 kids starting from aged three up to children going to high school.

“We also have the Midi section for the older ones so we’re doing well and Matilda just loves it.”
