Scottish Rugby call to void season has caused 'heartache' admits East Kilbride boss

East Kilbride coach Allan Steel says Scottish Rugby declaring the season null and void has caused “heartache” across the country.

Steel’s side were mid-table in West League One and had an outside chance of winning the title, but he reckons if teams have the same drive it will make for an ultra-competitive campaign when it starts back up again.

He has sympathy for sides who thought they were on the verge of promotion, including near-neighbours Strathaven, but Steel says everybody just has to get on with it and reckons it is the right call.

He said: “It’s heartache for teams all over Scotland who thought they were going up, and there’s a plus for those who thought they were going down.

“For us, we still had a lot of games and a lot of work to do, but we still believed we would have won the league and we’re not going to get the chance now.

“I think it’s the right decision, with the way things are, and you couldn’t give it to a team.

“There were some at the top, but there were two or three who could have gone and won it, like ourselves, Allan Glen’s, Garnock, Stewartry and Kilmarnock.

“We all had games to play, and all of us would still have believed that we could have won it, so it’s not as if they could have handed out the title.

“It will be a plus for the relegation sides who will get another crack at it, and it’s disappointing for the teams in the league below us.

" Strathaven had just about played all their games and were sitting top of the league, so they were looking like they were definitely coming up.

“I do believe this is the fairest way. There are a lot more important things going on than rugby, so I don’t think anybody is going to complain.”
