Scottish political parties to suspend campaigning during Prince Philip's funeral

Campaigning in the Holyrood election will be suspended tomorrow during the Duke of Edinburgh 's funeral.

Political parties across Scotland will halt activities while the funeral for Prince Philip is taking place at St George's Chapel in Windsor.

Some parties will not campaign at all on Saturday, while others will just halt their activities while the ceremony is going on.

The funeral will be attended by just 30 guests due to coronavirus restrictions, and social distancing rules mean the Queen will sit alone.

It is due to get underway at around 3pm.

The SNP, Scottish Labour, the Scottish Conservatives, the Scottish Greens and the Lib Dems all put a stop to campaigning last Friday and over the weekend following the death of the Duke.

Follow the announcement of Prince Philips's death, the First Minister Nicola Sturgeon paid tribute in the Scottish Parliament: "The Duke of Edinburgh was devoted to supporting the Queen. They were a true partnership.

"Like First Ministers before me, I got to witness the strength of that partnership at close quarters during annual stays at Balmoral.

"I always enjoyed my conversations with the Duke of Edinburgh on these visits and on all occasions I met him.

"I was struck by how different he was in private to the way he was sometimes characterised in public. He was a thoughtful man, deeply interesting and fiercely intelligent.

"He was also a serious bookworm - which I am too - so talking about the books we were reading was often, for me, a real highlight of our conversations."
