Scottish Parliament election 2021: All you need to know ahead of polling day

Voters across Scotland will head to the polls on May 6 in what is expected to be an eagerly fought campaign.

The fifth session of the Scottish Parliament was put into recess on March 24 which triggered the election campaign to start in earnest.

Politicians from all parties will be making pledges to voter s as they attempt to get as many MSPs into Holyrood as possible.

It's going to be a slightly different campaign due to the coronavirus pandemic, however expect the usual topics for independence, education and health to come up throughout.

Here's all you need to know:

When does the election take place?

Voters will head to the polling booths across the country on May 6.

Who is eligible to vote?

If you are 16 or over on the day of the election then you are eligible to vote.

Some people are excluded from voting if they are serving a lengthy prison sentence.

How do I register to vote?

There are a number of ways in which people can vote at the Scottish Parliament election.

The first and most common way is to head to your polling place (usually schools, leisure centres and community centres) on May 6.

To make sure you can practice your democratic right you need to be registered. The deadline for voting in person is April 19, however if you want your vote to be cast by post then you must sign up by April 6.

If you want someone to vote on your behalf the deadline is a bit later, it's on April 27.

When will the results be announced?

In a normal election the results would be known in the wee small hours, however this campaign is bit different due to the pandemic.

Counting is expected to start the day after the election on May 7.

Results should be announced on the weekend of May 8/9.

How many seats are up for grabs?

There are currently 129 seats up for grabs at the election.

Voting is different for the Scottish Parliament than it is for Westminster elections.

People vote twice - one for an MSP, the other for a party.

73 seats will be filled by constituency MSPs who are each elected on a first-past-the-post system - so the winner is the candidate who receives the most votes.

The second vote is for a political party.

Parties are then allocated a number of elected representatives depending on how many votes they get. There will be 56 additional regional members selected from eight regions across Scotland.

The regions are: Central Scotland, Glasgow, Highlands and Islands, Lothian, Mid-Scotland and Fife, North East Scotland, South Scotland and West Scotland.

Each region will have seven MSPs, this means voters will be represented by eight parliamentarians.
