Scottish Outlander village Dunure enjoys 'Sam Heughan boost' as tourists flock to location of hit show

Dunure is going through something of a transformation and it’s all thanks to the global success of Outlander.

The television series was filmed in and around the picturesque historic village.

And last year it brought an estimated 120,000 visitors to Scotland with fans travelling far and wide to follow the route of the film locations – with Dunure firmly on that route.

Now through the enthusiasm of local community groups and with help from South Ayrshire Council Officers and North Carrick Community Benefit Company, tourist trail signs have been sited at both ends of the village to encourage tourists and residents to pay a visit.

The new signs tell the historic events that took place in the long overlooked village.

The newly re-laid paths connect Kennedy Park to the Harbour, where long overdue resurfacing work will soon take place, then up to the soon to be floodlit castle.

The village has also seen the completion of a major refurbishment to the toilets in Kennedy Park and Kennedy Hall will soon be painted inside and out following the installation of new windows.

To sit alongside the toilets locals are eagerly awaiting the addition of a new store.

Janey McCreath of the Kennedy Hall and Park Committee said: “We are very grateful to Councillor Iain Campbell for his energy and enthusiasm in recognising the “forgotten gem” of South Ayrshire that is Dunure.

“It’s very encouraging to see all the changes and investment from South Ayrshire Council that has happened over the last year and the promise of more to come.”

There’s no doubting that the global success of Outlander has been the catalyst for Dunure’s long awaited turn of fortune.

And this comes after the Post found Ayr beach had been chosen over Dubai for a huge Bollywood romantic blockbuster last week.

Council leader Douglas Campbell, leader of South Ayrshire Council said: “Hopefully this type of exposure will lead to greater visitor numbers and a subsequent boost to the local economy.”
